The Value of Fusion: Italy-China, a winning partnership

From 2000 to today, more than 250 Chinese and Hong Kong groups have invested in our country. In the vast majority of cases (90%) the Chinese investor has control: 70% are greenfield investments, 30% acquisitions (60% by Italians and 40% by previous foreign investors). To work, this integration between Italian and Chinese companies must be cultural, even before corporate. There are many successful cases that have followed this path and even more opportunities for Italian companies that want to follow it, thanks to operators able to facilitate relations between two worlds destined to be increasingly in contact in the coming years. These were the topics at the center of the conference organized by Tuvia Italia - Kerry Logistics and Fondazione Italia Cina, with the support of the Italian-Italian Chamber of Commerce, entitled "The Value of Fusion: the importance of cooperation in economic relations between Italy and China ", which was held on March 22 in the prestigious setting of the Sala Tiepolo of Palazzo Clerici, in Milan, in front of over a hundred Italian and Chinese entrepreneurs.
The event focused on the interactions between Italian and Chinese companies at the time of the relaunch of the Silk Road and on the fusion routes, not always easy, in a historic moment that sees China engaged in a new season of globalization and transition from quantity to quality, as foreseen by the "New Normal". China is in fact facing a profound transition, which will lead it to be an advanced economy based in particular on consumption, services and innovation. A crucial transformation path to relaunch the Chinese industrial fabric and that is announced stable and continuous with a "long-term" presidency, as announced by XI Jinping. Today, China still offers many opportunities to Italian investors, but compared to the past it requires a greater knowledge of sectorial and local dynamics in view of the entry into the market: in particular that of constant consumption growth and that of technological growth, as expected from the Made in China 2025 plan.
In the two sessions the participants talked about success stories of integration between Italian and Chinese companies, and discussed the economic opportunities in China for Italian companies. In addition to opportunities, there are also obstacles. Cooperation appears to be the cornerstone of facing them and gradually overcoming them. However, the same alone is not enough, Italian companies must also take into account investments and perseverance in a medium-long term logic. It often takes time to build a trust partnership, and to understand the different ways of doing business with the Chinese.
As regards the success of the integration between Italian and Chinese companies, the case of Tuvia Italia-Kerry Logistics proves to be emblematic. Tuvia Italia SpA, an international and dynamic company with a solid family structure behind it, was acquired last May by Kerry Logistics Network Limited, one of the largest suppliers of Asian logistics services, as part of its growth strategy in the old continent.
"Joining the global network of Kerry Logistics has had an immediate and positive response on the market and from our strategic partners - declared Alessandro Canese, CEO of Tuvia Italia - Our logistic partners, shipping companies and airlines have immediately understood the potential impetus that the synergy of these two realities created. In short, the main effect was a significant increase in the reputation and reliability that was added to an already excellent credibility base, which makes it a force driving for a process of growth that was already in place ".
Thomas Blank, Managing Director of Europe, Kerry Logistics, said: "The addition of Tuvia Italia to our network allows us to exploit our mutual competitive strengths and offer new options and multimodal solutions that are cost-effective for our customers. the specific know-how of each individual European country with our global presence and logistics infrastructure in Asia, allowing easy access to the Asian market. This is why we are working as close as possible to our customers, to understand and meet their requirements ".

Kerry Logistics has progressively increased its presence in Europe with acquisitions in Spain and Germany and a new office in Warsaw, Poland, in 2017.

The challenge of the coming decades - emerged from the conference - will combine Italian excellence and quality with the demand for production and consumption in China. The aim is to achieve cooperation that leads to a mutual opening of the rules-based markets and to the strengthening of mutual potential through true integration not only economic, but also cultural.
